Orbera balloon

Orbera Intragastric Balloon System is a weight loss system that uses a gastric balloon that takes up space in the stomach. The balloon is placed in the stomach through the mouth using a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure while the patient is under mild sedation/intoxication. When the balloon is in place the balloon is filled with saline, as it expands into a spherical shape. The balloon can be filled with different amounts of salt water (400 to 700 ml) depending on the amount that best suits the patient’s stomach size.

How does it work?

Orbera Intra Gastric Balloon System takes up space in the stomach to help patients lose weight. The balloon is temporary and should be removed after 6 months.

When is it used?

It is used for obese adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40 kg / m 2 who have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise. The method should be used while the patient follows a diet and exercise plan, monitored by a doctor.

About the Orbera Balloon

A clinical study of a group of people showed that people who used Orbera Intragastric Balloon, lost more weight than those who did not. The study included a total of 255 patients who were monitored for one year. During this period, 125 patients had this balloon implanted for six months. After the balloon was removed, they were monitored for an additional six months. 130 patients participated in a 12-month diet program and did not receive this balloon treatment.

Patients with the Orbera balloon lost on average 9.8 kg (10.2{8c0bc175003e7c0198d4b5c8188b5cb6a6254c1baa13ba5d1bd876e79b1b4aa5} of their body weight) after the balloon had been placed for six months. Three months after the balloon was removed the patients maintained an average weight loss of 8.7 kg. The 130 patients who enrolled in a diet program, but did not get the balloon implanted lost on average 3.2 kg (3.3{8c0bc175003e7c0198d4b5c8188b5cb6a6254c1baa13ba5d1bd876e79b1b4aa5} of their body weight).
